Forsk · Atoll — RAN planning & optimisation software
Atoll supports wireless operators throughout the network lifecycle — from initial design to densification and optimisation.
Advanced multi-RAT RAN design for 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G, including massive MIMO, 3D beamforming and mmWave propagation.
Why Atoll
Atoll provides operators and vendors with a powerful and unique framework for designing and optimising indoor and outdoor radio access networks, from standalone deployments to enterprise-wide server-based configurations.
A modular and advanced 5G network planning tool with extensive 5G NR modelling: mmWave propagation, massive MIMO and 3D beamforming deliver a flexible, evolutionary framework for 5G design and deployment.
Combine predictions with live-network data — KPIs, UE/cell/MDT traces and crowdsourced data — to model traffic evolution, identify hot spots, steer site selection and drive the AFP and ACP algorithms.
The Atoll In-Building module brings indoor design into the same framework: floor plans and building elements, indoor propagation, equipment installation layouts and automatic bills of materials.
In-built task scripting and integration capabilities enable data- and service-level integration, letting operators streamline network planning and optimisation processes end to end.
Network lifecycle
Greenfield dimensioning, site selection and coverage/capacity objectives for every technology.
Frequency, PCI, PRACH RSI and neighbour planning with prediction-based or imported interference matrices.
Roll-out packages, antenna and parameter configuration, indoor/outdoor verification against measurements.
Automated cell planning, live-network KPIs, heat maps and progressive gain/loss evaluation for every change.
Platform architecture
Atoll is based on a modular architecture that makes it adaptable to operators' configurations, technologies and functional requirements. All technology modules run on top of Atoll Core and several technologies can be combined in the same configuration for integrated multi-technology projects.
The central module supporting the user interface, GIS features, the propagation modelling engine, data management services and interfaces.
Combines KPIs, UE/cell/MDT traces and crowdsourced data with predictions, and lets Automatic Cell Planning use live data for site selection and optimisation.

Backhaul and transmission network planning on the Atoll Core platform, with advanced LoS modelling and nLoS/NLoS capabilities for small-cell backhaul.
Advanced ray-tracing propagation models supporting multiple propagation scenarios and frequencies both below and above 6 GHz.
A universal high-performance propagation model developed by Orange Labs, supporting all technologies and environments from rural to dense urban.
Atoll supports a wide range of implementation scenarios — from standalone workstations to enterprise-wide, server-based and multi-user configurations, with distributed computing across networked workstations and servers.
5G NR
Atoll lets operators plan and optimise 5G NR networks deployed in both NSA and SA modes, alongside 4G and legacy 2G and 3G layers. A multi-technology network database, a unified traffic model, a combined Monte Carlo simulator and a multi-RAT ACP module provide a complete, evolutionary framework for 2G/3G/4G/5G networks including small cells, integrated Wi-Fi and IoT.
5G bands and urban conditions demand high-performance propagation modelling. Aster — delivered as a separate module — is based on advanced ray-tracing techniques and combines high accuracy with superior calculation speed, including a dedicated model for frequencies above 6 GHz.
Atoll In-Building
Atoll In-Building extends the platform to the centimetric precision and level of detail required for indoor wireless design. It supports multi-RAT 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G and Wi-Fi 6 indoor networks, including active, passive and hybrid DAS as well as indoor small cells — for stadiums, underground tunnels, corporate campuses, industrial sites and commercial centres.
5G makes RAN planning more complex and requires modelling complex venues in detail. Atoll In-Building lets operators plan and optimise indoor and outdoor networks simultaneously, directly assessing combined coverage, throughput and interference — and delivering more accurate network plans.
Atoll Microwave
Atoll Microwave is a state-of-the-art backhaul and transmission planning and optimisation tool for large microwave link networks — designed according to ITU recommendations, industry standards and operator guidelines, and fully integrated with Atoll radio planning modules.
Full integration with Atoll radio planning modules allows immediate sharing of planning and optimisation data for backhaul design. Atoll Microwave also takes advantage of the Atoll platform GIS, user and data management and reporting features, and is used by major wireless operators and equipment vendors worldwide.
Atoll Live
Atoll Live incorporates KPIs, UE/cell/MDT traces, CEM and crowdsourced data to add real-world information to predictions across planning and optimisation tasks. Live data can drive site selection and steer the optimisation algorithms of AFP and ACP — extending both accuracy and scope of use.
Automation
Atoll includes advanced, multi-technology ACP and AFP modules that run inside the standard Atoll user interface. All optimisation data and results are stored in the Atoll project files and databases, giving a direct return on investment from the planning environment you already use.
ACP provides integrated network optimisation functions for 5G NR, LTE, NB-IoT, UMTS, GSM, CDMA, WiMAX, Wi-Fi and LPWA/IoT — including combined 5G NR/LTE/NB-IoT/UMTS/GSM optimisation together with small cells and Wi-Fi.
AFP modules are based on sophisticated optimisation techniques used by a large number of operators worldwide, with dedicated 5G NR, 4G LTE, 4G NB-IoT, 2G GSM, WiMAX and Wi-Fi modules supporting technology-specific allocation features.
Atoll One · Private networks
Atoll One is a dedicated version of Atoll designed for small to medium-sized outdoor and indoor Private Mobile Networks. It delivers the same performance, accuracy and reliability that made Atoll the industry-leading planning tool — in a single, easy-to-install, easy-to-learn and easy-to-use package.
Use cases

A car plant runs its own private LTE network for production lines, connected tools and quality control. Atoll One imports AutoCAD DWG or BIM IFC data to model walls, floors and pillars with real materials, then places indoor antennas and small cells to remove coverage gaps and interference zones.

An outdoor LTE network covers runways and taxiways but not terminals, hangars and indoor facilities. Atoll One combines outdoor and in-building DAS modelling in a unified simulation, so planners assess indoor and outdoor coverage together and keep performance consistent across the whole airport complex.

Terrain, an excavated pit, underground tunnels and remote installations make mining the toughest scenario. Atoll One models small base stations inside the pit, radiating cable and active DAS in tunnels, and multi-hop microwave backhaul — from open sky to underground, in one project.

Utility networks span distributed grid infrastructure across wide areas. Atoll One models long-range coverage, backhaul links and critical substation sites so that operational telemetry and control traffic keep their availability targets.

Depots and stations need private LTE or 5G for operations alongside GSM-R or FRMCS infrastructure. Atoll One handles multi-technology projects, dense metallic environments and indoor/outdoor transitions in a single model.

Atoll One installs in minutes and can ship with the GIS data a project needs — ideal for private mobile operators and engineering companies working project by project for industrial and infrastructure customers.
